County Champions

A huge congratulations to The Castle Rock School’s Year 7 boys’ football team, who recently won the County Cup at Leicester City’s Seagrave training ground.

Having participated in the competition since September, the team enjoyed a stellar run on route to the final, winning five games.

They saw off Ibstock, Ashby and Ivanhoe in their three district matches, before they fell to defeat against The Newbridge School.

Having accumulated enough points to progress, however, the squad dispatched Martin High School 3-2 in an entertaining quarter-final, before a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Babington saw them reach the showpiece final.

Facing off against South Wigston High School, the sidelines were packed with visiting spectators who generated a fantastic atmosphere.

The match was balanced for much of the first half, before Castle Rock took the lead, courtesy of a deflected strike from Noah.

Throughout the second half, though, South Wigston grew into the game, and pressed home their advantage by netting an equaliser. As the onslaught continued, Castle Rock found themselves under considerable pressure from their opponents; but they dug in and defended expertly.

The match finished 1-1, with the overall champion to be decided via a penalty-shootout.

In a tense finale, it was eventually left to goal-scorer Noah to slot home the decisive penalty which secured a 17-16 victory and clinched the trophy for Castle Rock.

"The boys displayed resilience and discipline in all aspects of their performance and were an absolute pleasure,” said PE teacher Mr Binks.

“They conducted themselves fantastically with great sportsmanship and grace. They were a credit to the school and the Trust and were deserved winners in both performance and personality."

A huge congratulations to all the players, the staff and those who came to support from the sidelines!
